Aquaria FAQ: Plants
Plants need certain things to grow: light, CO2, nutrients and trace elements. This should be no surprise. What is generally not known is that plants need these things in fixed proportions (and unfortunately, the proportions vary with each type of plant). For example, if you have plenty of light, CO2, nutrients and most trace elements but not enough of one specific trace element for a plant, the trace element in short supply will determine how well that plant grows even though other plants do fine. This explains why some plants are "easier" than others - their needs are typically supplied by tap water or other incidental sources. If the plants aren't able to utililize all the nutrients due to a shortage of one or more specific elements, the "excess" nutrients and light energy will be wasted or be used by algae.

Beginner's Discus Page
After studying many Discus pages on the web, piles of books and my own fish, I decided it was time someone put a page out here for "beginners". It's not as hard to keep Discus as some would have you believe. However, lots of time, money (and fish) can be lost trying to learn the basics from the "experts". One breeder told me, "...read the books, then throw them out and go with what works for you!" Good advice, but as you may have found already, sometimes it's not so easy to find "what works"!

Betta Fantasy
[Singapore] Devoted to breeding of show-quality Betta Splendens [Siamese fighting Fish] in Singapore. I am in the process of expanding this website to include more pictures and betta topics. BkkBetta Website
BkkBetta is the group of friends who fall in love with this wonderful fish and we would like to share our happiness from this hobby to you and hope you will enjoy it like we do.
This site is created by Thai and dedicated to the gorgeous beauty of SIAMESE FIGHTING FISH - Betta Splendens.
Betta splendens
Betta's are beautiful fish originally from the Far East. The are also called The Siamese Fighting fish because if you put two males together they will fight usually until the death. The practice of fighting these fish is a popular gambling attraction. I however view this as a waste of such a beautiful fish.
Breeding the Angelfish Online
Angelfish breeding has progressed into an art form with the development of the veil finnages, superveil finnages, and the many color varieties. It is remarkable that all of these forms came from the original standard silver angelfish from the wild. My breeding procedures are constantly changing as I find more efficient methods of raising angelfish. I am constantly working on new crosses to produce unusual color varieties. I trust you share the enthusiasm and enjoyment of raising and breeding the truly exquisite angelfish.
Betta splendens
Quality Betta Splendens no longer carries any inventory for purchase. This is an information only site geared to Help anyone with there bettas from the novice betta owner to the advanced breeder of this wonderfull fish.
Blue Ram Site
Beauty alone makes this fish stick out from the rest but the fact that they are easy on the other fish even if they are a cichlid makes these babies even more wonderful. They aren't terribly hard to take care of they just take a little extra time which doesn't go unrewarded.
Bonnie's Plants (Pond Plants)

My husband, Rich and I have owned a retail florist, nursery and garden center called Sunburst Florist & Nursery since 1987." A part of the KoiVet web site.

Colorburst Bettas
Betta (pronounced BET-uh, not BAY-tuh) splendens is commonly known as the Siamese fighting fish because males will fight each other until only one remains. Even if the loser is still alive, he often dies soon after the fight from injuries and/or infection that begins at the site of injuries. That is why males must be separated from each other, with only one kept in a container or tank. They will, however, get along fine with many other peaceful tropical fish species, such as corydoras and glowlight tetras.

Discus (E)
The discus has, since it was first introduced in the beginning of 1960, fascinated people from all over the world and have rightly been called "The King of the Aquarium." The fish lives in feeder streams to the Amazonriver in Southamerica where the water is extremly soft and meagre of minerals. It swims in shoals of 30 up to over 100 fishes and you can see that it's a shoalfish as it likes to be in shoals in the aquarium.
Discus & Goldfish Keeping
The intention of this page is to give you a very brief ideas and guides about discus keeping and aquascaping your aquarium. I tried to minimize the contents of this topic so as not to duplicate subjects that can be easily retrieved from homepages of other authors that are also offering their knowledges on discus keeping. Included herein are several links that are of importance and invaluable. My advice is that browse through all those links and study how others do it and then consolidate it with what I have offered here. Throw away those that are unnecessary and go with what works for you.

DISCUS-L Home Page
About discus from the Discus-L (Discus mailing list).
Discus as Hobby
The discus is one of the most discussed fish species of this moment. You can find on the internet sites in abundancy concerning these fish. My experiences date from 1993. In April of that year a fellow member of the aquarium society donated some ten little discus fish of four weeks old. They have grown, due to a consistent feeding and lots of buckets of fresh water, to the size of 18 cm. After additional purchases some breeding-couples arose which made me able to raise a great many nests. To professionalise the care, I decided in 1995 to build the hatchery I have to day. In this case 9 tanks with the measurements 80 * 40 * 50 (lwh). A large biological filter filters it. Before building this cage, I imagined the most reliable and practical way to build a case (or let build) to prepare myself for this task. I was amazed that there is no single piece of information available for the "great aquarium builders". Nobody could give me any conclusive information how to build the most reliable and practical cases. That is why I traveled the country to visit the aquarium special shops from Maassluis till Enschede (London to Glasgow, New York to L.A.) Every shop had a different case with specific advantages (like full automatic water refreshing) as well as large disadvantages (a wooden case, with nearly complete disintegrated legs. So that is why I tried to supply, the prospective aquariums room builders, a digital ground plan. That is why this site is so rich of information.

Field Guide To Anemone Fishes And Their Host Sea Anemones
Dr. Daphne G. Fautin and Dr. Gerald R. Allen
(Yes, this is the complete text of the Allen book.)
Anemonefishes and their invertebrate hosts have delighted the western world since 1881 when the first captive specimens were kept in a tub of seawater. However, it was not until the mid-20th century that the intimate relationship of these tropical animals began to be known worldwide. With the advent of SCUBA diving and the establishment of commercial air routes to equatorial destinations in the Indian and Pacific Oceans, pristine coral reefs became accessible to an increasing audience. Skin-diving tourists, sport divers, naturalists, and marine scientists have all helped contributed to underwater discoveries, among them the fascinating natural history of anemonefishes. Virtually all large public aquaria have at least one anemonefish display, and these animals have been at or near the top in aquarium fish sales for the past three decades, attesting to their tremendous popularity.

Glimmering Goldfish
Goldfish are the most common pet found in households today! They have been kept as pets longer than any other species of fish. Although there are many varieties, all goldfish actually belong to just one species: Carassius auratus. Because of this, goldfish are similar in their behavior, required care, and habits. Goldfish are not tropical fish; therefore, they do not require tropical temperatures. They do best in temperatures between 500F and 700F in the winter months and 65oF. and 72oF. in the summer. They will provide years of enjoyment if they are cared for properly.

Z-man's Apistogramma & Dwarf Cichlids
Living in Western New York State I have been in the hobby for 20 years. I maintain around 80 tanks with a capacity of 3,800 liters (one thousand gallons); most being in the 38 and 57 liters (10 and 15 gallon) range. Most of the tanks are home to dwarf South American cichlids and of those, there are 20 different Apistogramma species. Having bred over 100 different cichlids I have been writing monthly articles for the "Youngstown Aquarist", the newsletter of the Youngstown (Ohio) Area Tropical Fish Society since 1995. Editor Curt Smith started calling me the Z-man and that name has become familiar in the northeast USA at all auctions, conventions and the OCA Extravaganza. I especially enjoy getting new hobbyists interested in Apistos and am now getting myself involved in dwarf to medium size Crenicichla species.
