The BOB (Breathing Observation Bubble) -MINI SUB CANCUN
The next time you are in Cancun, you may wish to check this out: BOB the "Breathing Observation Bubble" enables you to dispense with scuba gear to cruise amongst reefs and fish. Spectacular visibility is achieved using a clear acrylic, air-filled dome mounted on the headpiece. There is no need for a regulator, just breathe normally! Air is constantly supplied to the dome from a scuba tank attached to the front of BOB's body. The driver sits comfortably astride a seat under which ballast weights are secured. BOB is powered by a 40lb. thrust electric motor and a rechargeable 12 volt battery, both are housed under the seat. Combined they provide a top speed of 2.5 knots. A steering wheel and instrument console provides full control and system monitoring.

A collection of information and graphics about the coelacanth, particularly related to postage stamps on which the coelacanth appears.
[link opens in new window] THE COELACANTH - An Exhibition of Postage Stamps
The complete exhibit consists of 16 pages based on only SIX (6) coelacanth stamps from the Comoro Islands. It is fleshed out with proofs & trials of those stamps, 3 other Comoro Islands stamps, and related co-lateral material such as the 1952 postcard and the photocopy of a cancel on the title page. Now that the South African embargo has been lifted, more stamps from the FIRST country in which it was seen can aid in telling the story.

International Shark Attack File
The International Shark Attack File is a compilation of all known shark attacks that is administered by the the American Elasmobranch Society and the Florida Museum of Natural History. The American Elasmobranch Society is a professional organization comprised of international workers studying sharks, skates and rays. More than 3,200 individual investigations are currently housed in the File, covering the period from mid-1500's to present. Many of the data in the File originate from the voluntary submissions of numerous cooperating scientists who serve worldwide as regional observers. Regional observers forward investigations of attacks in their areas for integration into the File. Data submitted to the File is screened, coded and computerized. Hard copy documentation, including original notes, press clippings, photographs, audio/video tapes, and medical/autopsy reports, is permanently archived. The File is utilized by biological researchers and research physicians; access to the data is granted only after careful screening on a case-by-case basis. Direct access by the press and general public is strictly forbidden since much sensitive information is considered privileged. Requests for summary information and non-privileged data are made to the File's director.
Introduction to the Bacteria
Bacteria are often maligned as the causes of human and animal disease (like this one, Leptospira, which causes serious disease in livestock). However, certain bacteria, the actinomycetes, produce antibiotics such as streptomycin and nocardicin; others live symbiotically in the guts of animals (including humans) or elsewhere in their bodies, or on the roots of certain plants, converting nitrogen into a usable form. Bacteria put the tang in yogurt and the sour in sourdough bread; bacteria help to break down dead organic matter; bacteria make up the base of the food web in many environments. Bacteria are of such immense importance because of their extreme flexibility, capacity for rapid growth and reproduction, and great age - the oldest fossils known, nearly 3.5 billion years old, are fossils of bacteria-like organisms.
Lobster Cam
A small video camera is enclosed in an underwater housing, attached to the end of a regulation lobster trap. The signal travels over a 60' cable to the dock, where a Iomega Buzz Box gets the image. A Pentium computer running SpyCam software grabs an image every 2 minutes and ftp's it to midcoast.com. Dialer2000 software is being used to redial the connection automatically. Each participant in the project will (hopefully) place more detailed text here for a more indepth explanation. [Spruce Head, ME]
Marine Conservation Biology Institute
[USA] Marine Conservation Biology Institute (MCBI) is a tax-exempt, nonprofit organization dedicated to safeguarding life in the sea by advancing the multidisciplinary science of marine conservation biology. In response to the increasing worldwide loss of marine biodiversity, MCBI was founded in 1996 by Elliott Norse, a marine and forest conservation biologist who first defined the concept of biological diversity. MCBI helps scientists generate information that arms people with knowledge crucial for informed decision making, gets this information to other scientists, decision makers and the public, and works to build new alliances to protect, restore and sustainably use marine biological diversity. Headquartered in Redmond WA, we also have offices in Washington DC. MCBI welcomes donations, which are tax-deductible to the extent allowed by federal law.
