Catalina Conservancy Intranet--Marine Options Menu
The Catalina Island Conservancy Intranet was conceived by Vice-President William Bushing as a means of gathering accurate information about the island into a single resource, and presenting it to our island visitors at any visitor- serving location on island as a means of ensuring consistent content. The system itself was developed by the entire Conservancy staff working as a team in concert with our on- and off-island partners, our docents and volunteers, and the entire island community. We hope it will achieve the goal of easily disseminating the most complete, accurate and consistent information about the island to our guests. Please feel free to contact us if you feel any of the information contained in this system is inaccurate, if you have additional information to offer, or if you wish to comment on the system and its usability. Comments may be given by e-mail, by U. S. mail or by telephone.

Coral Reef Ecology
Coral reefs are among the most diverse and productive communities on Earth. They are found in the warm, clear, shallow waters of tropical oceans worldwide. Reefs have functions ranging from providing food and shelter to fish and invertebrates to protecting the shore from erosion. Through symbiosis with unicellular algae (zooxanthellae), reef-building corals are the source of primary production in reef communities (Richmond 1993). Biologically active compounds produced by reef dwelling organisms possess antimicrobial and antiviral activity (Van Alstyne and Paul 1988). These compounds may be important sources for natural product based drugs and medicines. In addition, revenue from tourists attracted to the beauty of coral reefs can be a significant source of income for human communities in these areas. Unfortunately, as our understanding of corals and coral reefs increases, it becomes apparent that the effects of the human population on these communities may be increasing as well.
Coral Reef Fishes
Of all the creatures dwelling on coral reefs, none are more active or obvious than the fishes. Perhaps more than any other single component of the reef communities, fishes provide the best opportunity to observe essential features of reef ecology.

A Do-It-Yourself Guide to Aquatics
For many individuals aquariums are much more than a hobby, they are a way of life. As such, through copious amounts of time and money, we strive for the optimum living conditions for our aquatic friends. However, money and time are two resources which seem to be dwindling in modern society. Chiefly among them, money is the hot commodity which limits the quality and growth of our way of life.
When given a choice, we invariably buy the best possible equipment within the constraint of our funds. Therefore, why not invest in the best possible aquatic environment while not committing vast amounts of capital? Thus the Do-It-Yourself guide to Aquatics.
This guide will give practical designs and implementations of wet/dry filter systems, protein skimmers, lighting hoods and stands. Through personal experience and information gathered from the net.gurus, all the elements for building and operating an advanced aquatic environment on a poor man's budget will be given.

For each genus information is given about the type species, the key diagnostic characters, its stratigraphical and geographical distribution, species currently assigned with confidence (not by any means exhaustive), and remarks about recent scientific publications dealing with this taxon. Wherever possible high-quality images are provided of specimens in oral, aboral and lateral views.
