March 2007 Events and News
CMAS March 10 - This is a must attend Event! Salinity measurement and Refractometers: Should salinity readings be taken with a grain of salt??? & How did I get here? Mike Kirda promises to take us on a behind the scenes tour of Aquarium Habitat, a marine exporter in Manila! On Saturday, March 10 at 1:00 PM, CMAS invites you to DeVry University near I355 & Lake Street for a special presentation by our own Reef Guru, Mike Kirda! Mike has been crunching numbers and doing some groundbreaking research on salinity measurement and the use of Refractometers to measure salinity. Mikeís talk will include the first data collection on various hobbyist-grade Refractometers. Mike is planning to have his research published soon, so this is our own sneak-preview of his efforts! Mike will also give us a rare behind the scenes tour of a major marine exporter in Manila. Do you ever wonder how the livestock gets from the ocean to your reef? Through Mikeís international travels, weíll get to look over his shoulder and see and hear how itís done! NOTE: Mike will be bringing his calibration solution, so anyone who needs their refractometer calibrated should bring it along! He is bringing a solution that is accurate to 0.002ppt. For those reefing newbieís, Mikeís adventure in Reefkeeping began in 1991 with an All- Glass 75-gallon tank. In 2000, Mike graduated to a 120-gallon Oceanic Reef-Ready system, showcased in the Kirda dining room with a 240-gallon remote sump currently housed in its own basement room. Mikeís early interest was mostly in corals and reef eco-systems. After getting PADI certified and diving for the first time, his attention turned to underwater photography. Mike still doesnít like to get wet without first loading his trusty Nikonos with a roll of Velvia! Mikeís interests have expanded into coral reef conservation! Mike has presented on a variety of reef topics at CMAS, MASM, IMAC and Brooklyn Aquarium Society. Mike has also been published in Reefkeeping Online Magazine and Advanced Aquarists Online Magazine. There will be a couple of great raffle items for CMAS members at this meeting! The meeting will be at DeVry University, 1221 North Swift Road, in Addison, IL. Hereís a photo that youíll recognize if you ever drive on I355: MAP AND PICTURES. If you have any questions, please call meat 847-421-2413. Boyd Corbett |
